Growth refers to a person’s stage of development. Mentoring helps aid leaders in their own spiritual growth and is proven effective in promoting an effective ministry. Only when a leader is growing and maturing will they be able to effectively minister to the needs of others.
Accountability speaks to a leader’s responsibility to God, themselves, and others (especially those they lead). Through true Apostolic accountability a leader assumes responsibility for their words and actions, and the resulting consequences. However, accountability cannot exist without proper structure and authority.
Unfortunately, the truism “power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely” is all too evident within the Church. This is often due to a lack of strong character. Qualities like honesty, courage, and integrity must play an important role in any leader’s life.
As leaders, we understand the need for building relationships with our peers; unfortunately most leaders do not seek out relationships with aspiring leaders. This leads to ineffective leadership and problems later on. This is why it is imperative that the current leadership of any church endeavors to develop and foster mentoring relationships with potential future leaders.
